Looking to #BeTheBEST in the sports social media game

I've been charged with helping resuscitate the UWA football social media platforms. When I took on the job, I thought, "I use social media so this isn't hard." WRONG. There's so much more to managing social media from a business or entity perspective: audience across platforms, content creation, scheduling regular updates, and building a following.

Kristin Twiford, content marketing manager for Libris, a marketing company that specializes in visual storytelling, shares some social media secrets in her blog, 7 College Sports Teams Share Their Social Media Secrets (2019), from top college sports programs like LSU, Clemson, and Nebraska to name just a few.

So what tips stand out the most?

1. Look to other programs and other sports to gain ideas. Notre Dame has a full team covering different aspects of digital marketing. They use the Chicago Cubs and Golden State Warriors as some of their inspiration (Twiford, 2019).

2. Use the different features the social media platform offers. Duke jumped at the chance to explore the Instagram story feature with their different sports. They post game score updates and use the story page to link back to their website which gives the follower more engagement by connecting them to game recaps (Twiford, 2019).

3. Create firm rules about what you will 'do' and 'don't do' on each platform. The University of Miami sets up parameters on how and what they post on each platform. Formatting photos and videos to match the frames on the platform: They make sure to have a 2x1 layout so the full image is seen as a follower scrolls. They commit to using a platform solely for specific content, for example they choose to keep their Instagram for photo only content staying true to the original use of the platform when it was created.  They Don't post for posting's sake. Tim Brogdon of Miami doesn't believe in just posting something. it needs to be the right media for the platform and the right focus for the audience (Twiford, 2019).

So how do we improve social media for UWA football? There's no specific recipe but by using the above tips, we've seen a regular increase in weekly followers, a week to week increase in engagements, and more dynamic content that is relevant.
